A wood-based gymnastics venue has been unveiled for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Costing $188million, the  Ariake Gymnastics Centre in central Tokyo is one of a number of custom-built venues to be used for the games.

By using wood from around Japan, the design is intended to emulate more traditional Japanese architecture, according to bimstore.

“We’re using a lot of wood,” said the venue’s general manager, Koichi Fukui.

“We can smell wood and feel the warmth of wood.”

Plans are in place for the venue to become a conference building once the games are over. The used wood is also intended to be re-used as benches in the conference centre as well as in other social projects such as schools.
