Argent, Autodesk, BAM Construct UK, Hill, Lakesmere Ltd, Mabey Hire, Mace, Plowman Craven, SES, Viewpoint, Vinci Construction UK and Union Square are the 12 companies showcasing how Building Information Modelling is having a positive impact on the UK construction industry in a new broadcast news project.

The Chartered Institute of Builders have teamed with ITN Productions to create “Building Tomorrow“, a construction magazine news programme highlighting how the United Kingdom can evolve in the years to come, and the best steps to get there.

Natasha Kaplinsky presents the show, which looks at ways to bridge the skills gap, attract new talent in the industry, encourage young people that construction is a suitable career path for them to tread and achieve the tough targets set by the Government.

Autodesk are “at the forefront of this innovative new world” of BIM, which is all about “the collision of digital and physical worlds”. Reporter Kate Recordon spoke with the software giant’s Dominic Thasarathar, who spoke of the importance of capturing reality and bringing it into a digital environment.

“We’re on this threshold of contractors having access to vast amounts of computing power via the cloud, enabling them to chew up very complex challenges on the fly. That essentially has the potential to transform project delivery from today’s best practical approach to one of tomorrow’s best possible.”

Why did the CIOB and ITN want to collaborate? “This is an innovative industry that uses smart technology and systems to overcome today’s challenges and to adapt to whatever the future may hold,” explained the CIOB’s Chief Executive, Chris Blythe. “It deserves to have its story told and in doing so we hope Building Tomorrow will attract the next generation into one of the most exciting careers out there.”

Simon Shelley, the Head of Industry News at ITN Productions also commented: “Construction is everywhere as our communities and landscapes develop, but each project requires good management, innovative people, and cutting-edge technology. Our aim was to explore the story of construction and engage with professionals from across the sector.”

That story was most definitely explored and engaged is what we most certainly were!

A day in the life of a BIM Engineer is examined in one of the videos, which follows Lakesmere Ltd’s Parinaz Falaki: “I get involved with part of the design of the roof, the detailing. I also get involved in the technical side which is engineering part wind loading and calculations to make sure that the building will stand up!

“One day I am working in the office and I’m doing 3D modelling. The next day I am on site walking on top of the stadium which is really amazing.”

Viewpoint and Union Square are also featured, in two reports that really put across the importance of collaboration utilising the latest software as Common Data Environments.
