A Senior Industry Marketing Manager at Bentley Systems has discussed various topics relating to Building Information Modelling in an interview with Geospatial Media that has been recently released online.

Filmed at Bentley’s Year in Infrastructure event in November 2014, Aidan Mercer discusses how BIM and GIS are starting to relate more to one another as well as being used in conjunction with each other. Regarding that trend, he stated: “BIM as a movement, as it were is really starting to take shape.

“The current trends if I look at it from a GIS perspective – what we’re seeing is a lot of growth in that area. GIS is moving to the cloud as well as BIM meeting GIS.”

Elaborating on this BIM/GIS relationship further, Mercer highlights how Bentley’s new Microstation Connect platform can aid BIM workflows. He added: “We have just launched our Connect edition [of Microstation]. From a design perspective, Microstation Connect really will be a gamechanger for us in the design arena. That provides a common modelling environment, a brand new intuitive user interface.”

Later in the interview, Mercer discusses Bentley’s acquisition of SITEOPS and how that strengthens their position as a major player in allowing customers to achieve Level 2 BIM.

“The acquisition of SITEOPS has really deepened our approach to BIM Level 2,” declared Mercer. “Performance enhancements with optioneering [is possible]. Optimizing a site before it’s built and doing preliminary cost estimations in a matter of hours, whereas previously that would have taken months. You can imagine the benefits and the excitement in the market that we’re actually pushing that through.”

Mercer also discusses Bentley Systems’ approach to education in the video, and he chats the Year in Infrastructure 2014 conference too. Watch the interview below.
