Building Information Modelling is being used to find major interface conflicts in a river-widening project.
‘Room for the River’ is an initiative that the Dutch Government are carrying out to change the course of 30 rivers in The Netherlands in-order to combat climate change and the increasing flooding in the country.
A spotlight has been cast upon a five-stage development of the River Waal (pictured above), currently running past the city of Nijmegen. After the work has been completed (which is scheduled for completion in 2016), the Waal will flow through Nijmegen, changing the way the oldest city in The Netherlands looks.
The main part of the Waal’s revamp will see the relocation of a river dike in the village of Lent, meaning the river’s path will be split into two separate channels as opposed to one just flowing around Nijmegen. Other focuses are the construction of a new bridge named ‘The Crossing’, a new city district and a new residential area near to the riverbank or Waalfront.
Belgian 3D engineering firm iNFRANEA are using Autodesk Navisworks for the river work, primarily to plan for interface conflicts and eradicate potential ‘failure costs’ which can cause delays. Johan Kuppens, President of iNFRANEA, spoke of the drastic plans:
“BIM lets you use intelligent, 3D models to engineer and understand projects. A model-based process opens the door to more visual and intuitive project coordination, but you still need a way to bring multiple models together. Autodesk Navisworks Manage provides the aggregated model we need to help keep the large project team moving in the same direction.”
