Award Sees Student Employed by Specialist BIM Consultancy

Northumbria University held its annual engineering and environment awards last week, which saw the introduction of a new Revit award and the winner taking a job at BIM Technologies.

Northern Construction Training and BIM Technologies’ new BIM training centre, Campus sponsored the new award, which was brought in to celebrate the use of BIM software by undergraduate students.

The ‘Best Related Use of Autodesk® Revit in a Coursework Module’ award was presented by Campus BIM trainer Peter James Morton to the winner David Law, a third year part time architectural technology student.

The 10 highest scoring Revit portfolios were anonymously reviewed by BIM Experts within Campus, BIM Technologies and _space Group. Each reviewer then picked the portfolio they deemed to demonstrate the best application of Autodesk Revit.

As a result of the award win David is now taking up a position at BIM Technologies.

Campus BIM trainer Peter James Morton explained why he wanted to support the award: “As a former Autodesk Student Expert, turned Autodesk Faculty Expert (http://www.studentexpert.net/) and part-time lecturer on the Revit module at Northumbria University I gained a valuable insight into how much effort the students were putting in and wanted to celebrate their success”.

“David demonstrated fantastic application of Autodesk Revit on a traditional residential design project for a module assignment and was a very worthy winner”.

“For a lot of the students I taught, this was their first exposure to BIM and associated software, it was great to see their learning journeys throughout the duration of the year”.

Award winner David Law said: “I was honoured to be nominated for the award as I had been looking to make the move from 2D draughting into architecture and 3D modelling and I am thrilled to be joining BIM Technologies in the next few weeks.

“I certainly feel that the training given at Northumbria University, and in particular from Peter, has allowed me to feel more confident about my work and push for the career move I’ve always wanted.”

One of Campus’ main objectives is to build skills of young professionals and increase their employment prospectus, sponsorship of future awards and raising the profile of talented individuals will ultimately enable this.

Campus is purpose-built, state-of-the-art training suite, which provides a bespoke 12-week foundation course in BIM. The programme is City & Guilds Accredited and covers all aspects of BIM, from project inception right through to facilities management.
