Following their hugely popular documentary spotlight on Cubicle Centre, multimedia masterminds The B1M have released a new informative video featuring another notable force within the Building Information Modelling community.
David Miller Architects (DMA) are the subject of ‘Building a Practice with BIM‘, a near-12 minute video featuring insight from the Founder of the practice, David Miller plus Practice Director Fiona Clark and Associate Directors Andrew De Silva and Anna Davies amongst others.
The first interesting takeaway from the video is the varying levels of BIM maturity that DMA have experienced when working various project partners.
“We’re coming across situations where it is much more normal to have everybody on the team to be BIM-enabled,” explained Clark. “We’ve generally always been able to find structural engineers that we have been able to collaborate with. Not so many MEP people but again that is starting to change.”
Associate Director Davies agreed, and she stated: “We have some issues with mechanical and electrical engineers and I think they are a little further behind the times. I think it is to do with their appointment as well, how they break up the appointment over the project.
“That has worked successfully on a number of our projects but sometimes we actually input that into the model as opposed to having another consultant doing it.”
DMA are also seemingly aware that the majority of young people graduating, becoming fully qualified and seeking employment are without much hands-on BIM experience, which is why they have an intensive tutelage programme in place for when newcomers enter their business.
“We try and initiate people as soon as they come into the practice where they have a kind of bootcamp to understand the program [BIM software package], so that is maybe a three to four day time period were they are solidly learning BIM.”
