E&T Magazine reports that complex 3D data will now be accessible to everyone in an engineering business, not just design teams, following the launch of a new company.
Chartered surveying firm Severn Partnership has opened new sister company SEEABLE, which specialises in enabling non-technical access to Building Information Modeling (BIM) data on desktops, smartphones and tablets.
SEEABLE hosts the data in a games engine app, augmenting it with information, images and interactive features allowing easy access to site workers or board directors who cannot operate complex CAD or BIM software.
The software repurposes the BIM data for safety briefings, marketing purposes and visualisation, allowing staff to visit a site virtually from their desktop.
Mark Combes, partner of SEEABLE, said: “We used to see all the effort going in to create 3D models and Building Information Models (BIM) for them just to reside with design teams and facilities managers in some form. Much of this work required high end technical software, or model viewers aimed at design teams.
“SEEABLE is our answer to moving these models on to the next stage. Once 3D data goes into SEEABLE, we can reuse it for architectural and engineering design.
“And because it can be viewed in an intuitive app environment, or through games-based learning, there is no need for complex software in order to make it possible to analyse and view 3D data.”
By using the 3D laser scanning and 3D modelling skills of Severn Partnership, SEEABLE is also able to create new 3D models and BIM from scratch where no data exists.
Mark Combes continued: “Our aim is to make real or virtual asset information visible and accessible to as wide an audience as possible and through integrating our services from Severn Partnership and SEEABLE we are making this aim a reality.
“The data we are providing to businesses can be put to a variety of uses from health and safety and design visualisation through to training and marketing.”
